[comment---I object to the characterization of cursors as slow and
cumbersome, they are in some systems but cursors may be moved with great
speed on others. In any case, this is not the place to make remarks about
cursors.]
Some {\caps crt} terminals use a {\bf light pen} instead of (or in addition
to) a cursor to indicate position on the face of the {\caps crt}. The
usual light pen is a hand-held pencil-like device, attached to the {\caps
crt} by an electrical cable, with a photo-sensitive element hardly
larger than a pinhead at one end. This element is held touching the {\caps
crt} screen and it generates an electrical pulse as the position to which
it is pointing is swept by the writing beam within the {\caps crt}. The
associated circuitry and software relates the timing of these impulses to
the position of the pen.
A light pen can be used, to draw lines and hence figures on the screen, to
indicate and move portions of drawings around on the screen, and to
indicate a choice between menu items that are displayed on the screen.
For example,.....(paragraph as is)
The light pen is deceptive in cost. The pen itself is not expensive but
its use involves either elaborate circuitry or complicated software
that is apt to be rather expensive.
